Last year, at the big local temple fair in my GF's village, the donations were going towards building a new temple (actually, there was none at this point), and on the big day, every family brought their money tree, though not all the donations were on it, just a symbol of the dedication to building the Temple for each family*. I had the honor of carrying "ours" after presentation to the monks.

It was a big day, very interesting, Thailand's patriarch came, and the last event of the day was the melting of the new Buddha image as well, a very impressive ritual moment, with a huge or rather long, sai sin (holy thread) circling the melting ground, and above.

I am not sure if it went thru the crowd and we had to touch it it as some kind of communion before that, my memory fails me . When the melting ceremony was over, everyone reached frantically (amidst laughs of course) to the sai sin above us to keep a thread of it.

Except me, I was just ready for a beer after standing for an hour! :)

This year, we had a funeral. Always something happening in "featureless" Issan..... ::

* and friends: I put Chocolate Steve to contribution: 300 bahts. His name ( how do you translate "porn again" in thai? :grinyes:) is on one of the roof tiles.

Hi Samak,

Yes, I messed up with the thai encoding. However, your thai script displays correctly.

I only recall hearing this expression from attending a festival in Sakon Nakhon in `93, so I am rather sure that you are right and I am wrong. Actually I am rather impressed with myself that I remember anything at all from this festival not only because it is so long ago but also because it seemed that the ultimate goal was to get as sloshed as possible asap :drunk:

Thanks for the clarification.

Cheers
