I had this little exchange on a recent post LaHoopi, LaoWooWee...(whatever!!):

GG: As I said, I have my reasons for using dialup. 1) More anonymous 2) My gf can use it from her computer at her house - she only uses it to email me when I'm in LOS.

LaoHuLi:

1. wrong.... you are much more anonymous behind a router on broadband

How so?? I heard a rumor that when you use dialup you have a different IP Address each time (dynamic addressing?) and when you use high speed connections you have the same IP Address each time. Is the router what makes broadband more anonymous?? Isn't that a specialized thing that one wouldn't normally find around the house?

Sorry...I don't know much about these things. I just turn it on and ....

[sorry, had to edit the title as it was fucking up the display - KS]

Hi,

doesn't matter much if you have the same IP every time or a different one. The link between IP and user/owner of the point of dial in (and this can be a friends telefone line where I dialed in to check on the latest nanaplaza news) can be done only by ISPs. Unless you are suspected to do criminal things via the net who will get to know the link between IP and telefone and therefore your name?

What LaoHuLi meant is that hidden behind a router your computer can't be seen from the outside world. Your IP address within the local network is unknown to the outside world and this makes it difficult to attack you. That kind of anonymity.

Btw, much depends on country and ISP, I am on broadband and get a new IP every day.

Anyway everyone capable of following me around the net would be bored to death. Checking news, exchanging files, talking to the other freaks on Nanaplaza...

So what are YOU hiding from us? CONFESS!!!

Well Carlton my friend, I'm sorry you lead such a boring cyberlife. I am of the opinion that I should be able to look at anything on the web. But in America, where sex is used to sell everything and where dick stiffeners are advertised on TV at all hours, just looking at some web pages is illegal. It's like being in a room with hundreds of doors. Each door has something new and different. Maybe some will disgust you, like beheadings, or fun with chickens or :censored: But it is actually illegal to open some of them just to look. Just surfing in cyberspace, sometimes the wind blows open one of the forbidden doors.

The way I see it, certain rabid puritans want to come into my living room, into the easy chair where I'm sitting and into my mind. If my mind asks my finger to click on a certain icon, they want to threaten me with arrest and humiliation. And we have a thing, being the confused puritans that we are, called "registered sex offender," which can probably be put on you for just about any old thing. Definitely for opening certain doors.

I'm also a person who, if you tell me I can't do something, then I want to do it.

GG

LaoHuLi,

do you agree that it takes more than just one short peek (more like many hours heavy downloading) to get into problems with the law. Gawguy talks like he is an internet user in Iran or China. Talks like every time a 'penis enlargement' pops up he'll go to jail. Last time I checked most americans were still running free.

I won't tell him how to anonymously access sites with a big warning 'disgusting illegal content inside'.

 me neither

some things you just got to learn yourself

(as to the 'surveillience' ....... in general there are 3 ways to get in trouble. by going to known child porn sites that are being monitored and using a credit card to access same, by being on some agencies watch list who are specifically monitoring you, by getting caught by your Gf or wife.)

Immediately after Sept 11, 2001, trying to access any newspaper or magazine articles coming out of Iraq got you on a toilet list. The US government keeps close tabs on any body looking at certain information they consider 'forbidden'. Big brother really does exist.
