King?s grandson Khun Bhumi ?missing?

Published on December 27, 2004

The shocked Kingdom awaited with great anxiety last night for the latest news on Princess Ubolratana?s son, Bhumi Jensen, 21, who went missing after giant waves hit the resort island yesterday morning.

A statement issued at the order of provincial governor Udomsak Asvarangkul said Khun Bhumi was last sighted in Khao Lak wearing a black jet-ski shirt.

He had been holidaying with Princess Ubolratana in Phuket since Friday. The statement did not give the circumstances under which Khun Bhumi went missing but suggested he could have been riding on a jet-ski.

?Anyone who spots a young man wearing a black jet-ski shirt please ask him whether he is Khun Bhumi, the son of Princess Ubolratana,? the statement said. Anyone finding a person matching his description was instructed to contact any government office, or the mobile phone number 01-693-1799.

Earlier, unconfirmed reports that Khun Bhumi was among those present in wave-hit areas in Phuket prompted a flood of phone calls from the public and the diplomatic community to newspaper offices.

Khun Bhumi was born in 1983. He has been studying at Kasetsart Demonstration School. He loves outdoor sports and going to Pattaya.

The official statement:

Country mourns King?s grandson

Published on December 28, 2004

The country was shocked and grieved when Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced yesterday that the body of Khun Poom Jensen, the grandson of His Majesty the King, was found yesterday at a beach resort in Phang Nga that had been pounded by tidal waves on Sunday.

The body of Khun Poom, son of Princess Ubolratana, was brought back to Bangkok yesterday on a special flight piloted by his uncle, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. Princess Ubolratana accompanied her son?s body.

The body arrived at the Royal Thai Air Force air base in the capital, where HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was waiting. A religious rite for Khun Poom will be conducted at Sala Sahathai Samakhom in the compound of the Royal Palace.

Khun Poom was last seen riding a Jet Ski in front of La Flora Resort hotel in Khao Lak district on Sunday morning when the giant wave hit. His body was found about 100 metres from where he was last seen, Thaksin said.

Princess Ubolratana was on holiday with her youngest daughter, Khun Sirikitiya, and Khun Poom.

Thaksin said when Khun Poom went missing after the waves hit, the authorities conducted a thorough search of the area in hopes that he possibly survived and was trapped in nearby buildings or hills.

However the bad news came at about 10am yesterday when a rescue team reported that Khun Poom?s body had been found at a beach near the resort, Thaksin said. The Crown Prince identified the body on behalf of Princess Ubolratana.

The princess, chairwoman of the To Be Number One project, cancelled all of the project?s campaigns next month.

One of Khun Poom?s bodyguards, who was providing security for him when the waves hit, was found stranded on a building at a nearby beach.

The bodyguard, whose name was withheld, said he and two other bodyguards were on a lifeboat providing security for Khun Poom while he was on the water when the tidal waves hit.

The waves swept over the lifeboat and the bodyguard later found himself stranded on a building at a nearby beach. He was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he received treatment for many wounds and bruises. Two other bodyguards were also found alive.

Thaksin said Khao Lak is one of the several areas that were hit hard by the deadly waves.

Separately, Vishanu Krua-ngam, deputy prime minister, said the Cabinet today would consider flying flags at half mast in honour of those who died when the tsunami slammed into the coast.

Three-day mourning period for tidal wave victims and no countdown

Published on Dec 28 , 2004

Government spokesperson Jakrapob Penkhae declared three-day mourning period for disaster victims from December 28-30, 2004 after tidal waves killed an estimated 2,000 people in southern coastal regions, and asked the people to wear all black. Moreover, there would be religious ceremony throughout the country on December 30 at 7pm.

Besides lowering the flag at half-staff, the governmental offices canceled all the New Year celebrations and activities while Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would not attend any New Year countdown or celebrations.

No doubt a great loss of face for the bodyguards, though there should be no doubt there was little they could do and they were fortunate to survive themselves. At least they didn't flee the scene as many truck and bus drivers are conditioned to do.

Saw another report where the rather large Sofitel hotel on Khao Lak was nearly reduced to rubble. My sympathies for those affected.
