Torneyboy
Thousands of people fled homes in western Thailand yesterday after rumours spread a new earthquake had cracked four major dams and were about to burst and flood the region. The panic in the inland province of Kanchanaburi showed how jitters over last months tsunami have extended even to areas unaffected by the waves. The governor and dam officials went on local radio to reassure the public that the rumours were false. But thousands of evacuees might not have heard the announcements said major Chaichan Kitichan the chief of police. Dams department director general Thavornam told reporters the dames were designed to withstand a 8.7 magnitude quake. These rumours gained new currency last wednesday after a new powerful earthquake struck in central Indonesia. a comment from some of the evacuees...."we do not trust the authorites to tell us the truth any longer" The Thais must wonder what is next? Guest
[color:"green"] Some of them are along South America, Japan, etc. With the frequency of the quakes, I would say we might be going to experience something really big soon. Remember, not too long ago: [color:"red"] Thursday, December 23, 2004 at 2:59:03 PM, just north of Macquarie Islands (between Australia and Antarctica), occurred a magnitude 8.1 earthquake. Right after it was detected, I received an e-mail telling the location and size of the earthquake. When I read the e-mail, I felt something serious was in the mist. Then on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 07:58:53 AM , the big earthquake (9.0) occurred. Shortly after it happened, some buildings in Bangkok swayed back and forth. Some people fled from their homes. About 1 to 1.5 hours later, the tidal wave hit the coast line. As you can see, there was plenty of warnings and a lot of time to warn the people, but nothing was done. I would say these people realize that if something [color:"red"] 'bad' happens again, there is a good chance nobody will be warned. [color:"white"] . . . . . . . thalenoi
MM, you know more than we do. What is a normal week of seismic activity? Maybe you can keep us posted on abnormal activity and possible consequences? An other big one (+7) in the Andaman Sea could cause an othe tsunami, scaring.... Take care Arkutha
Guest
There are several sites that post the latest on seismic activity. Check them out. The amount of stuff going on around 6.0 on the reichter scale; I would say is enough to raise an eye brow. I would say being that the the 9.0 changed a lot of the dynamics of the Earth, that we have to go more on gut feeling.
