Westerners' Rights and Globalization...

I need a recap here. Can somebody tell me exactly what the Thais are supposed to do?

Granting us half the rights we grant them in our countries would be a good start and would be beneficial to all.

Apparently well-connected foreigners can own property in Thailand.

Who? When? Where?

Foreign companies that benefit the economy are welcome.

By "welcome" you mean allowed to operate under the many restrictions, limitations and redtape?

BTW, the kind of foreign companies they seem to want to attract are the bigger ones, they seem not interested at all to create a social fabric of small and medium sized enterprises, the ones that I believe would help them at most, especially in "preparing" them to be succesful entrepreneurs themselves...

Freeloaders are not.

Ohhh, yes... how annoying are those skint farangs coming here in hordes to claim the generous, countless Thai welfare state benefits...

Thais shop at Tesco Lotus.

'cause that's where they find fair, clear and fixed prices for all regardless their status and their bargaining skills and because there they don't have to rely (that much) on the honesty of their fellow Thai sellers...

They watch our movies.

Guess they sometimes get tired of love and ghosts and ghosts and love...

Still, apart western action movies and the occasional porn they may see in private, what else?

They learn English.

So much that I have to speak Thai with the couple of Thai English teachers that I know...

They are developing a taste for fast food.

They eat more fast foods than, for example, Italy does. Your point?

They are tolerant when it comes to sex.

To the point of always assuming, at first sight, that a farang with a Thai girl is a customer with a Thai hooker. It doesn't matter their age, appearance, the way they carry themselves etc.

This was actually one of the things that I hate most in Thailand. I and my wife are both in our 20's and, without entering the looks argument, not long ago I have professionally been in sports for a couple of seasons so I am at least in great shape. No one in Italy could never ever dream of us as a customer/prostitute (probably the fact that in Italy there are very few Thai girls helps).

They don't expect anybody to go to church.

They just expect muslims to be prone to suffocation during the ramadan... ::

BTW, the no-nonsense iron fist in the south is just about the only Toxin's policy I fully support

Young people in the main respect their elders.

Especially if those young people are females...

Their visa requirements are designed to make sure they don't get swamped by expats. Where are they going wrong?

Their visa and immigration policies are designed to keep us at best as "long term tourists" and get the most possible from us giving the less possible.

Where are they going wrong? Unfortunately for them, "tourists" can't contribute much to the country they love and would live (and work) in besides spending there their money.

Furthermore, no stability, safety, peace of mind and the impossibility of any long term planning, mean that not many of the few of us working in Thailand (and thus in the better position, I believe, to contribute, in more ways than one, to the development of the country) will fully commit themselves to the LOS and do for it even the little the laws allow them to.

Corruption? It takes different forms in the West that's the only difference.

While I agree that corruption is everywhere, saying that the only difference is that it just takes different forms in the West is like saying that permanent residence, citizenship and the right to own land and houses are everywhere, they just take different forms in Thailand...

Oh man. You obviously have more time to debate this tripe than I do. :)

Actually, I have very little spare time and I will soon be gone  I have resumed the uni and also work part-time.

I just happened to be doing my periodic Thai based boards lurking and couldn't resist getting into the argument of civil rights and basic human rights in Thailand.

BTW, nice touch calling them tripe...
