Am assuming you have to pay housing & taxes out of the salary. I know a good bit about BKK prices after many trips but don't know much about the things that can reduce your check (taxes, housing by the month, health benefits if you have to pay, etc.) from that end. Is it common to need to take on extra tutoring to make ends meet? I think I read that somewhere.

 

My educational creds would be pretty good but teaching creds are zilch. I guess the "Do I really want to do this?" barrier is one to overcome if you've never taught. All I've read says appearance is big, discipline not a problem but students a bit zombified sometimes.

Depends what type of school, what program you are in and so on and so on.

 

My last place - a christian school - gave no holidays for xmas at all because it fell on a saturday and actually scheduled a xmas fair on you guessed it. Saturday that we had to appear at or be fined for non attendence.

 

Extra teaching for extra money - up to you. It all depends how much you spend each month. Some people do, some dont. At 46K you shouldnt have to, its plenty.

Ha!. Good sense of humor.

 

No, it's not really standard. Standard seems to be 0-3 weeks paid holiday. That's right, ZERO- many places are in the "why would we pay you if you're not working" school of thought. Others say, "Since we're paying you anyway, please come to the office everyday and twiddle your thumbs, i.e., write curricula, review whatever...). A minimum of 13 of the 16 Thai holidays are mandatory by law- but I'm not even sure that everybody gets paid for those, either. If you are hourly, you can pretty much bet that you're NOT!

Your expenses are basically the same categories that one would find in the west. Tutoring can be good gig- charge 800-1000 baht/hour, work 1 extra hour each day, that's an extra 20,000 baht/month!

Appearance and face are certainly high priority items. Discipline not a problem? That would depend on the sizes of your classes and what you consider to be a discipline problem. My idea is that, in a class of 25, if the "active" students are not interfering with the 5-10 students who do want to learn, then I don't really care if they do any work. The classes with 50-70 students are generally out of control, IMO. Thai teacher at the front of the room with a microphone, students not paying any attention.

 

Students seem to do very little thinking. You can teach them 3 + 2 = 5, but they cannot do 5 - 3 = ?, because you didn't teach them that! They can learn the definitions of words very well, but cannot USE the words. American uni professors say they are surprised at the high level of knowledge that freshman students have. By junior year, the same profs are saying they are appaled at the inability to use that knowledge to draw new conclusions.

I've said before that teaching is a career choice, not something to do to pay for an adult's frolic time. The better schools want to see a certificate or experience.

Not really. A government university or rachaphat pays 12 months, though you have about 10 weeks off in the summer and three weeks in October. Catholic secondary schools and most private universities also pay for the term breaks. (That is if you have a contract and are not part time.)

 

Where you get shafted on the term breaks is if you are working through a company that provides teachers to schools. I knew a gal who did not get paid for the term breaks by her school. Then she got asking around and found out that the school WAS paying her -- but the company was pocketing it all! Try to be a direct hire if you possibly can.

That is true about the rajabats and gov unis. I tend to lump those in one category, as the package is pretty much the same at these joints wherever they're located. At the many, varied schools and language centers, I think the pay for no work time is GREATLY reduced.

 

The agencies suck. Kinda like using an escort service in BKK- why bother? you can always find the same cheaper on your own, maybe just a smidge more effort. Yes, you will get fucked (both by escorts and agencies), but it won't be as nice an experience as if you did not use them :)

 

A coworker of mine got shafted out of his bonus that way at his last employer. Many of the schools will let an agency actually do the interview ongrounds. It may or may not be clear that it is the agency that is hiring, not the school. Unless you really go through the fine print in your contract, questioning everything (which you should anyway), you may not realize exactly what you will be losing to the agency.
