elef
PM heads off to the US for an 11-day visit Published on Sep 10 , 2005 Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra today left for New York to begin an 11-day visit during which he will join a UN summit and meet US President George Bush to follow up progress on a free-trade deal. On Tuesday, Thaksin will attend the Asean-UN Summit and later an informal summit, the "Conference on Interfaith Cooperation for Peace". The next day, the premier will join a high-level plenary meeting marking the UN's 60th anniversary, followed by a three-day General Assembly session. He will meet the leaders from at least eight countries on the sidelines of the meeting. Thaksin will head to Washington from New York on September 18 and is due to meet Bush the following day. He then returns home. High on the agenda with Bush will be a follow-up on topics that both leaders have been discussing, particularly the speeding up of the free-trade agreement between Thailand and the United States. Thai and US trade negotiators are due to meet in a fifth round of talks from September 27 in Hawaii. According to AFP, joining Thaksin will be a team of five forensic pathologists led by acclaimed scientist Pornthip Rojanasunand, who identified thousands of bodies after the Asian tsunami. The team will carry out similar work in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Nation
