Any recommendations for good Thai restaurants? Be staying downtown near Figuera. Only brief visit of a week or so. Probably side trip to Venice and again any good Thai nosheries recommended.

I've not been to a restaurant in Thai town...but use to go there frequently to visit the Thai markets and buy needed ingredients as I was learning to cook Thai food. The area has the largest population of Thai's in the US...about 250,000. Ask some of the locals for restaurant recommendations. While you'll find Thai restaurants all over LA...those that are away for Thai town are usually quite expensive....especially when you're aware of what similar food costs here in Thailand!

If you go to Venice...do it only on the weekend and see the 'zoo'. The zoo has been going on since Jack Keroac (sp?) lived there, many decades ago. The 'strand'...the walkway along the beach... is laden with all sorts of folks..musicians, jugglers, roller skaters, cyclists, magicians, palm readers...hell...it's different almost every weekend. Enjoy the side show...it fun and entertaining. Yet, in recent decades the area has become more yuppie like...with better restaurants, etc. The area is busiest during the summer months but should still have a fair crowd during a warm autumn day.

The Venice "Zoo" is always interesting , at one time there was a webcam showing it on a German Website,

the Beach and the boardwalk is ok, but a few blocks inland and it gets a little scary.

If its a nice day you can rent a bike and ride down to Marina Del Ray , or up to Santa Monica , there is a bike path along the beach

This is what I love about this board, it's better than "Ask Jeeves." ::

Yeah, I'll be in town from the 9th Nov. Going to a show at the Expo from about the 11th for 3 days. Provisionally gonna fly back on 19th. However, depending on things back here in Europe may have to return earlier. There's a bunch of things I'd like to do in Cali. Post Expo wanted to do couple of studio tours etc. Going with ex who wants to see her old pa and sis. So will be juggling.

I take on board what you say about the area at night. So not a good idea to go for a moonlight stroll then.

***Actually the 'bike path' goes all the way from the base of Palos Verdes (the south end of Redondo Beach) all the way to the north end of Santa Monica. Only when riding through Marina del Rey does it veer from the beach, the re-connect with Venice Beach) At the latter point (Sta Monica)it joins with the Pacific Coast Hwy (ride along the edge of the Hwy)...going through Malibu and north. It's a bit dangerous on the Hwy.

It's a great way to see the prime beach areas of So Calif. The best beaches...for body surfing... are Manhattan and Hermosa Beaches (I lived many years in Hermosa)....and these are prime gal watching beaches too! Also a number of bars for ogling and gossip are close to the Manhattan & Hermosa Beach Piers.

Sadly Los Angeles is an unfriendly location if you are without a car. Some interesting things for tourists if they are looking for theme parks and things.

Around the Convention Center are the Usual "hostess" bars that cater to the male "convention" crowd. This is escorted dancing provided by Latina dancers. Extras can be negotiated sometimes but prices are not LOS cheap.

Venice is not to be missed on the weekends, especially if its sunny out. There is even the "Flower of Siam" restaurant to eat at in Venice that is owned by a lady that used to be the head chef at Chan Dara, one of the best thai food places in LA. At the end of the night she prepares "real" thai food for the staff and invites me to eat with them when ever I am there. An all round nice lady and excellent cook.

I second LukDods bike itinerary, a great way to sample the beach life of Southern California.

Enjoy your stay!!
