Guest
I disagree with OldAsiahands opinion that Needham's writing is of international quality. I've read "The Big Mango" and found it to be mildly entertaining. I don't know if Needham knows any words of more than two syllables long, but it read (to me) like a junior high newspaper. I'd guess that any reader for a prominent publisher in NY or London would be looking for a job if he/she pushed this one up :-) Too much of the story is like an "inside joke". If you know Thailand and BKK it is comforting to recognize the venues and some of the cultural phenomenon that is planted in the story. But, to an avid reader of detective stories/mysteries/suspense (or anything above the reading of "Dick and Jane"), I'd suggest spending your baht on a more established author associated with a major publisher. BTW, I'll be in BKK at the Nana next month. I'll be happy to bring my copy of "The Big Mango" along and present it to the "first claimer" Chongnoi chongnoi@homail.com
colonel Kurtz
Quite a good read is Stephen Tyrell`s, "Kicking Dogs".It doesnt get a mention as much as Stephen Leather`s books etc,but is more entertaining than the abysmal Christopher Moore. OldAsiaHand
The Nation's review this morning of Barrett's little picture book seemed to me to be unnecessarily harsh, even nasty. It left me with the feeling that maybe they were pushing an agenda that went beyond just a book review.
