What city and place names mean

BkkShaggy,

the "ramya" (pronounced rumya) is right then.

The word "rommani" also crops up in Soi Rommani, a small decrepit lane in Phuket Town, notorious for its cheapo brothels - despite the name there's nothing "charming" about it anymore. The old Sino-Portuguese houses are half-collapsed. Still, there are some old hookers holding out.

Then we have the Rommani-nart Park in Bangkok (between Wat Suthat and Mahachai Rd.), the site of a former prison.

"Rama-Jani" in Hindi is a "dancing girl" or "pleasing woman". The British colonialists, ever ready to boldly mispronounce, corrupted the word into "Rum-Johnny".

Nobody who I asked in Bombay, where there is a Nana Chowk (Nana Sq.), has a clue as to any meanings to the word other than the ones we have offered. It's always wrong to assume that the locals know more than interested outsiders! To most Indians, "nana", means "maternal grandfather", nothing else. Anyhow, it's a strange surname for a Muslim.

There is a Talaat Nana (Nana Market) along Samsen Rd. near Soi 2. In that lane lives a gentleman by the name of Mohamed Nana (at least he used to live there), and one can safely assume that the market's name is connected to his family.

บุรีรัมย์ /buriram actually in thai letters

buree ramy with a silencer or garun over the

y or ย as it is in thai.

Im looking in my newly acquired thai/sanskrit

dictionary

smile.gif" border="0 and there seems like there is a few possiblities. what about ramanyee means woman, looks the closest as the ny is written as a y in thai although a different y "ญ", many possibilities around enjoyable,

pleasant etc.

But still looking for the right word
