Thailand to block over 800,000 sites

November 28, 2005 from the Sydney Morning Herald

Thailand plans to block more than 800,000 pornographic or violent websites that officials say are harming the kingdom's youth, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says.

During his weekly radio address, Thaksin said he would order Thailand's internet service providers (ISPs) to block websites deemed dangerous by the government, which bans about 2000 sites.

"I will warn the ISPs to do that first and if they don't follow the order, their licenses would be cancelled," he said.

The ban, which affects both foreign and domestic-based websites, is likely to come into force before Thailand's Children's Day on January 14.

I don't like this kinda news as you just don't know what they will consider banning and for what reasons...

Thaksin owns Loxinfo, which already bans most nudie sites. Maybe he wants to keep people from using the other ISPs to see them?

p.s. When is he going to solve the traffic problems, as he promised he would so many years ago. Easy enough solution: bans all cars from the roads except for Mercs and Benzes.

Here is one such list

Enjoy while you can. I suspect many of the listed sites are blocked inside LOS already. Not that I would look, mind you

On a more serious note, its often tough to say when personal freedom for one person becomes an infringement on another's rights. I think child pornography is one area in which most people unhesitatingly agree that the freedom of expression (and its converse - the right to observe the expression) should take a back seat to rights of others (in this case, the child.)

But in other areas, such as political, religious, and artistic expression, the case for harm to an individual or society is not so clear (to me at least), and censorship in these areas appear to be a threat to democracy, no matter which "democratic" country the censorship occurs in.

He is becoming increasingly unpopular with the Bangkok middle class, but still popular up-country because of his economically reckless populist give-away programs.

At a meeting of the British Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, Drs. Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit estimated that the Thai GDP needs to grow by at least 5% to generate enough graft to keep the constituents of TRT happy. We'll be well below that amount in 2005. Some Thais I know are now suggesting that the "R" in the initials for this party should be changed to an "F".
