Korea

My on the scene experience is pretty dated, so I won't go on about the good old days.

If you have spent a winter in the U.S. midwest, it's probably a little warmer in Korea on average and not as much snow. You will need a good coat, but it ain't Siberia.

There are people from everywhere in Itaewon. You are at least as likely to be mistaken for an African as a G.I.

Yes, Koreans can be pretty stoic, but do NOT believe the B.S. about them being all work and no fun or no sense of humor. One thing you don't have to worry about is Korean girls talking about you in Korean without you knowing about it. Even without speaking a word of Korean, you'll know and even if it's good or bad.

And yes, Koreans do like to drink. If you are offered something called soju, make sure you have a safety line attached to the earth so you don't fall off.
