chuckwoww
Police suspects in Isan murder of Lao couple MANOP THIP-OSOD A number of police officers are thought to have been involved in the murder of a Lao-American couple in Nong Khai province and will be arrested if the evidence against them proves to be solid, a police source said. National police chief Pol Gen Kowit Wattana yesterday ordered Pol Maj-Gen Yuthana Palanitisena, the Nong Khai police chief, to to report to him on the progress of the probe into the murder of Anouvong Sethathirat IV and his wife Oulayvanh by two men inside the compound of Wat Kaewkoo monastery last Wednesday. http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/24Jan2006_news12.php
chuckwoww
Victims not of Lao royal blood Police have found no links between last week's murder of a Lao-American couple in Nong Khai and earlier killings in the Northeast of Lao people believed to be members of an anti-Vientiane resistance movement. Police spokesman Ashirawit Suphanphaesat said yesterday that background checks also showed Anouvong Setthathirat and his wife Oulayvanh, who were shot dead on Jan 18, were not descended from a Lao royal family. http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/26Jan2006_news13.php
Flashermac
Not descended from a Lao royal family ... but that had the Wiengchan royal family's name??? Either that was not their family name or the police are full of it. Wonder how they determined their ancestry. With polygamy in the past, there were royals running all over the place. Even my wife is descended from the Prince of Chieng Tung through her great grandmother. Means nothing -- except that her mother got a bit more respect in the village. (No money though, just a bigger farm than most.)
chuckwoww
Yes that is strange....there must be thousands of people running around with royal Lao connections. I know a few myself. It seems like an attempt to play things down. I don't think we'll ever get the whole story on this one.
Flashermac
And still almost nothing in the international press.
chuckwoww
Unrelated story? On Thursday Laotian foreign ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy told the French news agency AFP: "The US embassy informed us that 26 children have been forced by Thai police to cross the border." "These activities of the Thai police are illegal and are in violation of the existing mechanisms between the two countries," Mr Yong said. Analysts say the issue highlights the need to clarify the fate of the 5,000 Hmong refugees still living in Phetchabun. Last July, Thailand threatened to repatriate them en masse, but the UNHCR cautioned against any mass deportation, asking instead that each case be assessed individually. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4650582.stm
Flashermac
Treating them almost as badly as they do the Burmese refugees ... if one is allowed to talk about that. Meanwhile ... http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060123/NEWS01/60122022/1069
chuckwoww
Wow, the Asheville Citizen-Times is all over this case. It could soon become a major international incident. And Dr. Judith Sides seems to be carrying on the crusade. Let's hope she's not just a gullible do-gooder.
