If even the times has woken up to reality what excuse do others have? Along with this article is another on the front page about an undercover investigation using a pakistani reporter going into mosques in Yorkshire. He recorded a leading Imam praising the London bombers as going gods work, will the evil old devil be arrested? not any more likely than the ones urging slaughter last week being delt with. Interestingly the Imam in question condemed terrorism and the bombers in public but holds very different beliefs in private. I think many believe this is widespread in the Islamic community in the UK.

Excellent point. Many imams, in many countries, have said one thing in public, another thing when speaking to the faithful in Arabic. I remember an undercover investigation in Sweden several years ago. It wasn't about terrorism, but about female "circumsion" and arranged marriages of 12 and 13 year old girls to men in their 40s. An imam and the "rector" of an Islamic school (supported by public money) had agreed when speaking Arabic to a female undercover reporter to help arrange the genital mutilation and forced marriage of young girls, even though both were on public record as saying they were strongly opposed to such practices.

 

Yasser Arafat used to do the same thing. In English, he would sound reasonable on Israel, but never used the same wording in arabic. To Muslims, the only "real language" is Arabic. The Qu'ran isn't considered the "real" holy book unless in Arabic. Versions in English and other languages aren't called the Qu'ran, but the Qu'ran in translation and can't be used in any ceremony requiring the Qu'ran.

You are right and what a pity this is, rather like insisting that people should only read the bible in ancient greek. It leads to muslims in most countries learning great chunks of the koran without knowing what it actually means. Perhaps some of the Imams prefer to keep them in the dark?
