midnightblue
Just noticed that there will be major celebration for the King's 60th anniversary of taking the throne on June 9 to 12. He has invited 28 other monarchs to join him that weekend. This coincides with my first trip to BKK in years. Will these celebrations cause a shut down / clamp down on the bars, like it did for apec some years ago? ------------------------- Govt is prepared to host the grand celebrations on the occasion of HM the King's 60th anniversary of accession to the throne. The government prepares to host the grand celebrations on the occasion of His Majesty the King?s 60th anniversary of accession to the throne, inviting monarchs from 28 countries to attend the events. Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam commented on the preparation for the celebrations, saying that the government is now ready for the events. He said that the royal ceremonies will be held on June 9-10, beginning with the merit-making ceremony in the morning. His Majesty will then open the Chakri Maha Prasart Throne Hall, where additional construction work is being done. After that, His Majesty the King is scheduled to allow audiences with many groups of people who come to give him blessings at the Throne Hall. Mr. Wissanu said that state ceremonies will be held on June 12-13. The head of the organizing committee for state events, Surakiart Sathirathai said the Thai government has invited kings and queens from 28 countries to the ceremonies, 26 of whom have accepted the invitations. 14 of the monarchs will travel to Thailand for the ceremony, while the rest will send royal representatives. eyebee
I don't think anyone knows right now. We'll have to wait until nearer the event. Bars often don't get notification that they have to close until the day before - or even on the day itself!
torrenova
Not as far as I know but we would not get the notices this far in advance. We don't normally shut for this day in the calander.

Pom Michael
Although this year June 12th has been declared a National Holiday. So, using logic, you don't know what will happen. Should be a CELEBRATION - but from recent years we have seen that doesn't mean that entertainment venues should be open. Cheers!
hankb
And just out of curiosity...when the bars have to shut down does that mean the soapys do too?
midnightblue
i found this on a govt site: On June 9, the date of the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne, a royal ceremony to pay tribute to past monarchs will be held in the Chakri Throne Hall. His Majesty the King will also grant a general audience to the public. The day, a Friday, will be a normal working day, but employers are asked to cooperate by giving paid leave to staff who will be participating in the event. Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13, meanwhile, have been declared public holidays in Bangkok and its perimeter, to avoid traffic problems and to ensure effective security measures for visiting monarchs from around the world. The highlights will be in June, with the royal barge procession and spectacular fireworks on June 9 and 12. The fireworks will be the most spectacular ever seen in the country. The Subcommittee on Fireworks is coordinating with the Royal Thai Navy on the timing, venue, and scale of the fireworks. On June 9, the fireworks will be timed to coincide with the paying of tribute to His Majesty the King all over the country. The Ministry of Interior will be the core agency for the task. ---- so is it right to assume that nightlife venues will be shut on night of June 12 if june 12 & 13 are public holidays? Guest
It doesn't matter what Holiday it is, you can always find some open bars in Pattaya The biggest enforcement of closures we get here is from the MiB coming in from Bangkok, and it sounds like they will have their hands full protecting the high profile visitors
