Slow weekend?

What I mostly remember having as a child was English, German, Italian, Mexican or Southern food (aka soul food).

As you say, junk food was not at all common. A meal was a meal, not something that looks like it was prepared by an airline. My mother or grandmother spent some time making it. If we went out to dinner, it was likely for a real meal in a real restaurant.

p.s. Best hanmurgers I ever had were at Buck's in El Paso, Texas in the 1950s. There were as big as a small plate and the choice of toppings was unbelievable: sauerkraut, hot peppers, every kind of sauce and veggie you can imagine. When I saw what passed for hamburgers in California, I was shocked -- 1/4th the size and smothered in mayonnaise. :(

OK,OK I give up, people are giving up European vacations for gastronomic tours of the Mid West. I noticed though that most of what you pointed out was 'ethnic' food though. How many years does it take to establish a national cusine I wonder? I had some clam chowder on a cruise ship once that was nice.

In Australia our best restuarants are Vietnamese, Italian, Thai etc. Even our best BBQ is cooked by the Greeks and Yugoslavs, ever heard of chevapchichis? (Fuck the spelling, too lazy to look it up.) My home state has a unique dish called a pie floater, a meat pie in thick green pea soup, definitely truck stop grub although the best are sold by a pie cart that parks outside the Adelaide casino all night.

If you ever make Chiang Rai Cent, I'll give you a few lessons on how real BBQ chefs work, got some pork chops in lime juice, black pepper and olive oil right now.

Sure, send your booklist I'll look forward to it, I've got a couple of books for you too. Back in Oz for a week at the end of the month so no rush. First time I've been past Chiang Mai since January.
