'No secret prison here'

Representatives of the Foreign Ministry and US Embassy yesterday rejected any suggestion that Thailand had hosted one of the secret prisons that US President George W Bush acknowledged this week.

In a speech on Wednesday, the US president admitted for the first time that the Central Intelligence Agency had operated secret prisons outside of the United States to detain and interrogate terrorist suspects.

Foreign Ministry deputy spokes-man Kittikhun Chartprasert said yesterday that, despite strong speculation, Thailand never had one of these so-called black sites.

Makes me feel glad and relieved that this is denied so quickly.

There was a secret prison inside the CIA base in Udon, but that was closed one year before the news came about the secret prisons as it was published in local newspaper. Some rumours later that CIA borrowed a building from NSA in their base for a secret prison but not confirmed.

I'd say the US govt. would win all awards for mendacity....really...how can anyone trust a thing Bush et al. say? But it seems many believe the bullshit....why is he still in power?
