WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush would like to see a lengthy U.S. troop presence in Iraq like the one in South Korea

White House spokesman Tony Snow said Bush would like to see a U.S. role in Iraq ultimately similar to that in South Korea

Iraq's neighbors have raised concerns about the possibility of the United States maintaining permanent bases in Iraq, and some U.S. lawmakers have said they think the Iraqi insurgency may have been fueled by perceptions the United States wants a permanent presence in the country

I like her hair.

Tracy Sheehan has decided to drop out of the antiwar movement, blames it on the liberal democrats who have turned against her (she says). Bush never did agree to meet with her. She said if she had US $25,000 she could get a meeting with Bush, but her son's death was not payment enough to get passed the secret service.

Joe sixpack is watching sports channels only so no need to worry about him :grinyes:

He talks too much, unlike his predecessor who said the bare minimum. The bush boys are scrambling because they have been saying we'll see if the surge is working when September rolls around. When September comes and goes and nothing has changed a new strategy will emerge. Fellow republicans are threatening to bail out on Bush come September. Could be an interesting time because then the dems will have enough votes for a withdrawal date.

Petraeus will probably come up with some kind of feel good report in September and ask for more time. The South Korea analogy is the best they can come up with. I don't know what the permanent bases are supposed to do. Obviously they want to keep as many troops as possible in Iraq but they don't want them to keep getting killed for nothing.

bush does not care about 'dead boys'

he intentionally bombed civilians going in ..

& the sanctions killed 100s of 1000s over 10 years

the us cannot leave the persian gulf with serious consequences to all western societies.

what has happened is a lot of very rich people have had all of their family murdered, all of their friend murdered .. their society crushed .. their self worth humbled..

good reasons for 'supply retribution' .. like the Russians are doing with the gas pipeline to western europe.

the us needs the draft & 100,000 boys in Iraq for 50 years .. 100 years ..

problem is paying for it after the republicans gut the coffers.

like steve earl sings about the draft in copper head road .. the white trash go first 'round here.

any thoughts about why / how we got here?[/color]

Bush obviously doesn't give a shit about the Iraqis. I'm not sure how much he cares about the dead US soldiers. He can always point to the fact that it's a volunteer army. He does care about votes but he said the other day he thinks most Americans support the war. I think it's more a question of most Americans wanting to win. Trouble is nobody knows what 'win' looks like.

As to how it got to this point...Bushco thought it would be easy. Get rid of Saddam, install democracy, get that oil flowing. Didn't work like that.
