elef
The Nation Today Link Urgent: August 20 extra holiday The Cabinet Tuesday approved the proposal of the Election Commission to make August 20 an extra holiday to encourage workers to return home to cast vote in the national referendum on August 19. Deputy Government Spokeswoman Netpreeya Choomchaiyo said the Cabinet assigned the Finance Ministry to consider whether the day should be a bank holiday or not. carew66
A lot of smiles in my office just now. Day off for a coup - day off for an election. Gotta love Thai politics! (It is only a proposal though, innit? Fun factor now reduced by 25%)
Pom Michael
Not a proposal - confirmed. But many business follow the lead from the banks. So it is a normal work day for me. But traffic will be nicer. So, the next two weekends will be long (but dry) weekends.
Flashermac
Two 3 day weekends in a row seems a bit odd. Expect a lot of absent students and "sick" employees in between them.
MooNoi
Why the hell do people have to go home to their province to vote?? Seems totally ridiculous. In this modern day-and-age surely there can be some sort of national voter roster? Haven't they heard of postal and absentee votes?
Flashermac
No more idiotic than the census counting Thais as where their house registration is, not where they actually live. That's how they came up in 2000 with an "official" population for Bangkok of about 6 million, when it is actually closer to double that.
Ongchaiyai
Isn't voting "up to you"...I think that they just go home for a visit, flash the cash and bring back some food??? or help with the rice-harvest.
TheCorinthian
Is the first weekend this Fri Sat?
Pom Michael
TheC, Yes, Sunday is the Queen's Birthday and Mother's Day, so Monday is a substitution holiday. Then next Sunday is voting day, so now Monday is a holiday to allow for nationwide voting. We will see what happens with bars and entertainment zones for this Sunday night. farangman
The 20th holiday will not be dry apparently and bars will be open as normal. This is because the referendum does not come under electoral law as does an election. This was in yesterday's Bangkok Post.
