$14.8 billion later, Big Dig finally done

Deaths, cost overruns cast pall on nationâ??s most complex highway project

BOSTON - When the clock runs out on 2007, Boston will quietly mark the end of one of the most tumultuous eras in the city's history: The Big Dig, the nation's most complex and costliest highway project, will officially come to an end.

Don't expect any champagne toasts.

After a history marked by engineering triumphs, tunnels leaks, epic traffic jams, last year's death of a motorist crushed by falling concrete panels and a price tag that soared from $2.6 billion to a staggering $14.8 billion, there's little appetite for celebration....

Firm to pay Big Dig collapse family $6 million

Maker of epoxy that failed to hold up ceiling tiles says product was misused

BOSTON - The family of a woman killed when the ceiling of a Big Dig tunnel collapsed on her car last year has agreed to a $6 million settlement with the company that supplied the epoxy blamed for the accident, attorneys said Monday.

Milena Del Valle, 39, was killed July 10, 2006, as she and her husband drove through an Interstate 90 connector tunnel. Her husband escaped with minor injuries.

Investigators determined that the ceiling collapsed because workers secured the ceiling with a fast-drying epoxy that was not safe to use for overhead loads...

I heard about this highway. Senator Ted Kennedy brother of the late JFK for non Americans, would always protect this project. Tons of people made a lot of money off this project. He had the power to make sure the project kept going despite massive overruns. This should be a poster child for government waste.
