Samui yes or no ?

I did forget to make one point on Koh Samui. Despite all the commercialism, etc., why do I go back? The main reason is the Thais have trashed most of the beach areas. When I say the beach, I really mean the water--it's dirty, polluted (more or less) in most places -- Hua Hin, Cha - Am, Pattaya, Jomptien, Rayong, Koh Samet, most of the beaches on Phuket, Krabi (Ao Nang and north is bad, but Railey is nice)-- trashed. The beaches are fine and clean, but the water...even the Thais don't go in except for the children. I won't comment on those place I haven't been, Chumphon, Ko Chang, and Songkhla in the south.

Again, it's a question of degrees and what you are used to. Nowhere in Thailand do you get any of pristine transparent waters like in some Caribbean Islands, like the Turks, Anguilla, St Barts, etc, parts of Hawaii, the Maldives, etc., to mention a few. But Koh Samui, and Chaweng Noi in particular, is still relatively clean, but it too is going downhill. Give it another 10 years and add it to the list. But, now it's still OK. I might mention, this is my kids' opinions as well, and they are the reason I go to the beach, when asked, they say Koh Samui. They are Thai, they hate the other commercial bullshit more than I do, but they do like to play in the water.

your observation of the shallow water in northern Chaweng is correct, however during high tide you can still swim in there.

i would say that south of the Regent, the water is much deeper.

not sure whether the water quality is better than Phuket, but certainly better than in the golf and in particular in Pattaya area.

Well, that`s got nothing to do with the water quality. Most just don`t like it, simple as that.

The thais that I know of know jack shit about water quality. What other explanation could there be for see them swimming in the bkk khlongs?
