the_numbers
anybody had any particularly good experiences with any given shop?? storage is of course always a concern for the nice grape juice... would appreciate a head's up anywhere, especially vientiane. the city is crawling with options, but none i'm familiar with... cheers, the_numbers
Julian2
Just stroll around numbers. You'll see a couple of small supermarkets with stocks and last time I was there, about 12 months back, there were also specialist wine and spirits stores near the Black Stupa. I also hear good reports about the duty free shop at the Bridge but I haven't been in there personally. I personally like the wine and spirit store that's on the Black Stupa roundabout across from the American Embassy.
CTO
You can get some great wine there, but the best was always in restaurants, the shops where hit and miss at times. I've never been there long enough to work out which ones I can trust
dddave
I saw some amazing bargains in the duty free area at the bridge but I always worry about how they have been stored and transported in the intense Lao heat. I was talking a few months back to a guy who seemed to know wine very well and he claimed that he had never gotten a spoiled bottle there. Heavy on French selections with some chateaus you never see outside of exclusive shops. Be sure to find out in advance how much you can bring back into Thailand; the boys are always looking for bonus money.
