Yup. I remember my mother selling poppies for the VFW auxiliary. My dad was post commander around that time, back when eveybody was a vet (even rich folks' kids). I still buy the poppies here every 11 November. Money goes for disabled Thai vets - who like as not were conscripts (draftees) just as my father and I.

 

(My grandfather was drafted in WWI, one of the first 500 men called up in Cook County. But the SS board told him he was worth more working for the railway as he was than as an ordinary grunt.)
