Explosion at PAD

Nine people were wounded, one seriously, when someone threw an explosive among anti-government protesters at Makkhawan Bridge near the Government House.

The bomb was lobbed at around 3:30am from outside the gathering of members of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who have been staging anti-government protests since May 25 around the Makkahawan Rangsan Bridge, site of the explosion.

The target appeared to be a "forward post" used by internal security guards of the PAD movement, which has established its current headquarters inside nearby Government House.

PAD core leader Chamlong Srimuang blamed the attack on the government.

He said that the attack would not stop the PAD from marching on the British Embassy in Bangkok on Thursday to demand the extradition of Thai former premier Thaksin Shinwatara.

Khanit Sapitak, commander of the First Army region in and around Bangkok, described the explosive as a bomb, and denied any connection with the army.

Lt-Gen Khanit said he has contacted the police to investigate.

Army specialist Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, an outspoken anti-PAD activist, also denied any involvement in the bombing.

He said, however that it is now time for the PAD supporters to leave Government House. He added that he believes the PAD faces "a group of enemies" who are adopting guerrilla techniques. :alert:

He also said that PAD guards will die every day if the group does not withdraw from the Government House.

Maj-Gen Khattiya said there are many groups that are unhappy with the PAD seizure and occupation of Government House, and its response against high-ranking officials who have came out to warn the group for the occupation.

PAD guards allegedly assault two men

Two men have filed complaints against People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) guards for beating them up.

The first complaint was lodged at the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

Khao Jaengsuk, 39, showed up there on Wednesday's night with bruises all over his left arm and his right arm in soft plaster cast.

He also sustained broken jaw and a shallow knife wound in his stomach.

Khao said six PAD guards attacked him on October 25 accusing him of being a member of an anti-PAD group in Udon Thani.

"They tried to force a confession out of me. But I am not in an anti-PAD group. In fact, I had been attending PAD rally at the Government House since early September," the 39-year-old man said.

He said the PAD guards kicked, punched and threatened him.

"They locked me up in a room but released me the next day," Khao said.

Khao's relatives sent him to the Rajvithi Hospital for treatment.

The second complaint was filed by a taxi-motorcyclist, Am Daosing.

Am, 39, Thursday told police that some PAD guards physically assaulted him on Wednesday after seeing his vehicle sported a sticker emblazoning "Fed up with PAD".

"I took a passenger from Siam Square to the Government House that day. After she got off, I ran into a group of PAD guards at the Chamai Maruchet Bridge," Am recounted, "They pointed at the sticker and dragged him into a room near a shrine".

Inside the room, the guards beat him up while questioning whether he was paid to wreak havoc at the PAD rally.

"They even took away my ATM and forced me to give them the code. After they checked the ATM and found that I had no money, they allowed me to go home," Am said.

The taxi motorcyclist had been detained for more than four hours.

After Am found his left temple swollen this morning, he sought treatment at the Police General Hospital. He then lodged a complaint with police.

"Their actions are so barbaric. We are all Thais. We can talk," he said.

PAD to leave Ratchadamnoen Nok Road

The Peopleâ??s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) is ready to clear Ratchadamnoen Nok Road to allow the royal funeral procession of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana to proceed between November 14 and 19, PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang announced on Tuesday.

However, Maj-Gen Chamlong said the police would have to provide security for its supporters if they wanted the PAD to open the road quickly.

He said the group will have to raise its security and use more spotlights to monitor areas around the protesting site, following an explosion about 200 metres away from its rally early Tuesday.

Police reported the explosion was similar to a previous blast caused by an M-26 hand grenade that was thrown at Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge, injuring six PAD supporters.

Chamlong said representatives in the government-PAD talks must be credible individuals, and it would not be necessary for third parties to take part in the negotiations.
