Suthep: PAD suing the wrong person

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the People's Alliance for Democracy is making a mistake in threatening to sue Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for malfeasance and false incrimination for allowing police to file criminal charges against PAD leaders and supporters over their blockade of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports lastyear.

Mr Suthep said he was assigned by the prime minister to oversee the Royal Thai Police, so the PAD should sue him instead.

The government would appoint a lawyer to fight the case if the PAD does take legal action against Mr Abhist, he said.

Mr Suthep said he did not know the PAD's motive in planning to bring the charges.

Asked if he thought it had anything to do with the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship's demand that the prime minister remove Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, who was also charged over the seizure of airports, from the cabinet, Mr Suthep refused to speculate.

The deputy prime minister continued to defend Mr Kasit, saying he was a professional diplomat and had performed well.

"There are no political reasons that would lead to the removal of Mr Kasit," he said.

PAD Lawyer Suwat Apaipak on Thursday said the accused would file criminal and malfeasance charges against the police and Mr Abhisit.

Police last week said they would charge 36 People's Alliance for Democracy leaders and key supporters, including Mr Kasit, for occupying the two airports from Nov 25 to Dec 2 last year in an attempt to overthrow the Somchai Wongsawat government.

They will face terrorism charges.

Mr Suwat said the the charges were baseless because the blockade of the two airports "caused no damage to aviation".
