Pardon petition for Thaksin submitted

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) submitted the petition seeking a royal pardon for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary on Monday afternoon.

Ten prominent figures of the anti-government group led by Veera Musigapong together with five Buddhist monks submitted the royal pardon petition containing more than four million signatures to His Majesty's Deputy Principal Private Secretary Inchan Buraphan at 1pm.

Earlier in the morning, some 10,000 red-shirt supporters from across the country gathered in Sanam Luang before parading to the Grand Palace at 12pm to hand over more than 500 boxes containing the signatures.

Ten companies of police and four companies of soldiers had been dispatched to maintain order and prevent potential unrest during the mass rally.

After the petition was handed, the UDD supporters dissolved and many had returned to Sanam Luang.

The Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary will transfer the petition boxes wrapped in red clothes to the government for inspection before deciding if the petition should be submitted to His Majesty.

Pardon petition for Thaksin being verified

The Justice Ministry's Legal Affairs Bureau has been assigned to examine a petition filed by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship for a royal pardon for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, said permanent secretary for justice Kittipong Kitayarak on Tuesday.

Mr Kittipong said the bureau is duty-bound to examine the petition and classify the UDD petition, which he said is different from others because it was not filed by Thaksin himself or his close relatives.

He said the Corrections Department has also been instructed to compare the UDD petition to others received in the past. On receiving information from the two agencies his office will make a report to the justice minister to recommend further action, Mr Kittipong said.

Mr Kittipong said there has been no political pressure for the ministry to speed up its work. At this stage, it is not necessary to set up a special committee for legal interpretation, he added
