Mentors
More than one million people had signed their names in support of petition for a royal pardon for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a core leader of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship, Natthawut Saikuea, said on Friday. The signature collection campaign would continue until July 31. At midnight that day the UDD would announce the total number of signatures it had gathered and would afterwards .submit the petition to the Bureau of the Royal Household, Mr Natthawut said. He insisted the bid for a royal pardon was not initiated by Thaksin himself. It was a move by red-shirt people exercising their rights under the constitution. The red-shirts would also hold celebrations on Sunday to mark Thaksin's 60th birthday, with events planned in Chiang Mai, Lop Buri, Singburi, Roi Et and Nakhon Srithammrat, he said. Bangkok events would be at Wat Kaew Fah in Nonthaburi and Mang Korn Luang restaurant, and would be broadcast live by the People Channel TV station. http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/149981/udd-ready-to-seek-royal-pardon-for-thaksin now it becomes very very interesting what "some people" will do... Barry
I thought it was generally understood to be not the done thing to ask the king for anything or suggest what action he might take. if he's going to do it, he will, and no one else has any input on the matter. Flashermac
Apparently, pardons also cannot be given until a person has begun serving the sentence - not whilst one is a fugitive making periodic phone calls to stir things up.
