Faustian
Mind boggling figures. What will become of them I wonder. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/30111692/Over-110000-students-drop-out-last--year Over 110,000 students drop out last year Last academic year had seen 113,432 students dropped out of schools with Ubon Ratchathani province having the largest number at 2,771 dropouts, a senior official at the Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) said Monday. Obec Policy and Planning Office director Rangsan Maneelek said that 45,092 out of such dropouts cited their family's poverty as the reason. There were 23,651 students citing other reasons, 12,481 citing family problems and 15,384 citing relocation with family. Meanwhile, 4,571 students left to find jobs to support their families, 6,347 said they had difficulty in adjusting themselves and 4,822 left to get married. While 853 students dropped out due to health problems, 231 persons were punished for crimes, he added. The Nation

TroyinEwa/Perv
I'm dense.....is this university and below or just university? There seems to be no separation so I'd have to say this includes elementary, high school and university. Without doing any research, how does this compare with previous years? TroyinEwa/Perv
I just wanted to try to take a guess at how many of those 110k would end up in the nightlife area like lee asked but I'm not gonna even try if half of them are 8th graders. Now if they were 8th graders in West Virginia, that would be different as we all know the average age of an 8th grader there is 19.
Flashermac
Almost certainly they are talking about secondary school students. By law all Thai children are supposed to complete at least the 9th grade, when they would be about 14 to 16 (depending on when they started 1st grade). Those quitting to marry would be girls, who still married at ridiculously young ages in Isaan (and get dumped by their young husband once they have a kid or two). There is nothing to wonder about, since if they completed the 9th grade these dropouts would still know fanny adams. The schools have been dumbed down on the western pattern. In former years, students had to pass nationwide exams to advance in grades (4th grade, 7th grade, 10th grade). Nowadays students are moved along as if on a conveyor belt. Nobody fails or repeats a grade. It takes a 12 grade certificate to work in a 7-Eleven, so even that is out to those who quit at grade 9.
