Parting Shot

The BBC program Parting Shots - about resignation and retirement messages from various public figures - featured in episode on a valedictory dispatch from Sir Anthony Rumbold, UK Ambassador to Thailand in 1967.

Selected lines from the 10-page report - written in confidence but now released under UK Freedom of Information law - are causing a stir in LOS. The full dispatch (2.5MB) can be downloaded from:

The program can be heard (even overseas) at:

My favourite line so far is "Bangkok sucks everything to itself." :content:

That piece could have been written last week with about the same content (with the exceptions of specific character names from that era, but replaced with similar characters from this era).

"are causing a stir in LOS" - haven't notice this even discussed anywhere yet in Thailand.

It's quite old news insofar as it was mistakenly widely circulated at the time it was written, but the BBC resurrected it and it appeared in the Nation which prompted a dissociative comment from the current ambassador.

But yes it is still pretty current in some aspects, especially about those dreadful American chappies "...pushing up the rents and corrupting the girls." :grinyes:

20 years ago it was "those nasty Nips" pushing up the rents and prices. :)

p.s. Ah, for the fun in the mid 1970s, when the US appointed a former CIA director as ambassador to Thailand! For some reason the students decided to protest. :hmmm: He didn't last very long. I met him once before he was "reassigned".
