Three men were arrested and 5.4kg of ice, or crystal methamphetamine, seized in Chiang Mai early on Wednesday.

Maj-Gen Sawat Krataithong, director of the coordination centre for drug suppression along the northern border, said at a a press conference at the Pha Muang Force headquarters that para-military rangers stopped two pick-up trucks for a search at a checkpoint about 1am in tambon Mae Na Wang in Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district. They found the drugs in the two vehicles.

The drivers - Sukhon Kongmuang, 48, and Kammoon Yomkham, 51 - were arrested. Theygave information that ledt to the arrest of Sawang Himavej, 54. All were from Fang district of Chiang Mai.

Pornthep Iamprapai, director of the Region 5 Narcotics Suppression Office, said the drug was produced and sold in a neighbouring country at 600,000-700,000 baht per kilo. It cost about 1 million baht per kilo on the Thai side of the border and would sell for 1.5 - 2 million baht per kilo elsewhere..

Col Somsak Nilbancherdkul, deputy commander of the Pha Muang Force, said large quantities of drugs had recently been smuggled across the border.

Between Dec 25 and Jan 6, drug suppression units arrested altogether 15 suspects in nine different actions in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces, seizing a total of 542,400 methamphetamine pills, 5.4kg of ice, 20kg of opium, and 0.3 grammes of heroin.

It was obvious that drug producers across the border had stepped up production. The drugs were more readily available as traders were required to make only a small deposit, he said.
