My only problem with the above analysis is the continued reference to “farmers and the urban working class, excluded for years from Thai politics until the coming of Thaksin Shinawatraâ€Â. The fact is, these people are voting for the exact same people for Parliament they have voted for in every election their entire life. The difference is the people they elect are fighting among themselves.

 

One interesting thing that is ignored these days is the fact that the candidates for both the Bhumjaithai Party and Pheua Phaendin Party campaigned in 2007 election on the promise they would not be part of a coalition with the PPP and then promptly after the election they did so. So, when they did join the Democrats in a coalition in 2008, they were in fact just keeping a campaign promise.
