OK, here is my reason for asking. We have 3 (4 if counting CEP) entertainment centers. Approx. 30 bars each (I'm not sure about Pat Pong). Assumming an average of 30 punters in each bar at any given time, that comes to 2,700 punters in the three main entertainment centers (SC, NEP, PP) at any given time. That is less than 10% of total punters in the LOS (35,500), who are actually visiting the three main entertainment areas. Of course there is Pattaya, Chiang Mai, etc., to explain this, but is this a reasonable assesment from the data? This obviously works out to approx. 1,000 punters in each of the 3 areas on any given moment.

 

 

 

Assumming a 3 to 1 ratio of punter to bargirl, there would have to be 3,000 girls, or 100 in each bar, to collaborate.

 

 

 

I've heard before that there are 3,000 girls working in NEP. Might be true, due to part-timers, days off, long term barfines, etc., but I doubt that you will find 3,000 there at any given time. Too many small bars there which can only accomodate 15-20 girls (titty twister, etc.).

 

 

 

So...in your esteemed opinion, what would both the punter count, and bargirl count be, for the three major entertainment areas at any given time.

 

 

 

I think the math cross-checks pretty good up to this point. We should be able to nail this down fairly accurately. I'll explain my reason for wanting this info. when we diseminate (sp?) it.

Here's my take shortly after getting up (so probably flawed..)

 

 

 

OK?I gave this a lot of thought. 100K farang sex workers. I bet at least 25% will not be working the scene at any given time due to days off, trip back home, and the BIG one?.taken out L/T. That leaves 75K available for hire on the street. Say ½ work BKK. That?s 37,500 total available farang sex workers in BKK. A 4 to 1 ratio would mean 9,375 punters are looking for them in BKK. Where are they?

 

 

 

Well?first of all, the 4/1 ratio is not consistent with all venues. GoGo?s would not have a 4 to one ratio. Many of these bars are hard pressed to have enough girls at the end of the night. Ratio is lower. Say 2.5 to one. Would mean girls there average 1 punter every 2.5 days. A little more than two per week on average for all gogo workers. Sounds about right for me. Some every night, some once a week.

 

 

 

So how many gogo workers are there. First of all, remember the 100K farange sex workers include ALL sex workers, presumably. Servdeks, cashiers, hello girls, even mamasan?s all get taken out, so must be included in the mix. We have about 125 bars in the main entertainment complexes. I believe each averages around 30 NEW customers a night if no one moved around. You have to remember that they all get hundreds of customers because of punters floating from bar to bar. This would be around 1,000 new customers per night, per complex. 3 complexes = 3,000 punters frequenting them. 2.5 ratio would put 7,500 workers in the 3 entertainment complexes, or 60 possible sex workers in each bar. I don?t think this is far off. You must remember this is not the average number of gogo dancers you will see on stage at any given time. Some come in on different shifts, breaks, move outside to tout, and remember the one?s that have already been taken out. Also, the servdeks, cashiers, etc. must be included, too.

 

 

 

So?that will leave us with 30,000 sex workers and 8,375 punters. We discounted the sex worker by those out on L/T, so we must do also for the punter. 15% out on L/T status? That gives us 6,700 punters out looking elsewhere than the entertainment complexes. And we are up to a 4.5 to 1 ratio now, because of busy girls in gogo?s.

 

 

 

What?s left? Freelancers, beer gardens, MP?s, escort services, all the little side soi bars, soi 33, KSR, Disco?s, Thermae, Edens, Uni students??.That?s as far as I?ve gotten.

The real variable I think is number of girls in the business, and what percentage actually work in BK. The 3,000 punters, and 7,500 workers in the 3-4 main entertainment plazas can't be that far off. But 30,000 left over sex workers in BKK? Even if 5,000 are walking the streets, that still leaves 25,000 working in a business establishment. Also means that 1/5th of all hookers are in the 3-4 main entertaiment complex's.(EntCom's).

7,500 in mp's. - Remember, some big. And there are lots of them, and some may have two complete shifts as many are open during the day.

 

 

 

15K in small bars/beer bars. - Includes the hundreds of small bars/beer bars with regular employees. Eden, Nana beer bar, Asoke plaza, Washington Place (?), soi zero, KSR, soi 33, all beer bar complex's, etc., would be in this group. Again, many of these places are open during day, so have two shifts of girls.

 

 

 

5K in Discos, freelancer joints. - This figure discounts the many who are from other listed venues, but show up here if can't get customer from homebase. 5K includes part-time Uni students, BG 7, Angels, cm2, Hardrock, thermae, etc.

 

 

 

2.5K streetwalkers/escort service. - This includes in-house hotel message service, and all misc. sources including Suk girls sitting on steps, call-in escort services, etc.

Anyway, that's the breakdown I was looking for--the 2001 TAT farang figures. Now, armed with the only concrete numbers available, we can proceed.

 

 

 

But just so we are on the same page what are we trying to answer? I agree, it is bound to get sloppy but ideally later rather than sooner. Seems to be spinning out of control, getting too far ahead.

Judging from the age breakdown, half (500.000!) of the females are visiting with males and half either alone--though in significantly smaller numbers than solo male travellers who easily hook up with companions--or with female friends.

 

 

 

Assuming this, however, only complicates your problem as subtracting the 500,000 counterparts now leaves you with 1.2 million single holiday males which means later you're going to have to look even harder for the army to service this larger group. But don't fret yet, though maybe not primary care givers, they're out there.

 

 

 

But in my view the next step would be to identify a percentage of sex tourists from this 1.2 million.

Had a gander at the work you cited. Info on Thailand slim. What little there is is mostly pedophillia. Overall, takes a more global view (with a lot of talk of forced trafficking) rather than the globalization of the SEA brand (voluntary migration). And the model Thailand has established for the foreign market is unlike anywhere else--with the possible exception of SEA counterpart Phillipines--rendering any comparisons with other world hotspots meaningless.
