From the Bangkok Post 24 May 2002:

Just in case there's someone out there who still doesn't know, here's the deal. Starting in exactly one week, about 63 percent of this planet's inhabitants will think, talk and dream of little else but football (the British interpretation of the word, that is). This period of inertia will continue for one month until June 30. Thereafter, if all goes well, normal life will resume.

We're talking, of course, about the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the biggest sporting event ever staged. Here in Thailand, the nation is girding itself for football fever on an unprecedented scale. Virtually every pub, restaurant, shopping centre and mall throughout the Kingdom is installing equipment to capture and enthrall soccer fanatics with live coverage as well as non-stop re-runs of previous games. If you don't like soccer, too bad. There's no escape. For others, here are some suggestions on where to watch the tournament:

Shenanigans on Convent Road will show all games on its giant screen and on 10 newly-installed flat TV screens. Its World Cup buffet at 250 baht net includes one free drink. Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is setting aside its nightspot Riva's as the place to watch the action. On any day, fans will receive a voucher for the following day's play entitling them to 20 percent discount on all drinks. There's also an All You Can Drink special at 650 baht for Heineken beer while the live football is in progress.

The Library 1918 at the Dusit Thani (Rama 4 Road) is being turned into a mini soccer stadium, with 52-inch screens being fitted. Buffet and snacks will be available, along with national tables for fans to book.

Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square is erecting a big screen in the Boom Room of Concept CM2 and offering free flow of Carlsberg, Chivas Regal, Martell VSOP and Seagram's gin, plus Italian and American snack buffet for 490 baht net for matches aired from 6:30pm.

The Lobby Bar is the place to watch World Cup soccer at the Pathumwan Princess Hotel (Phaya Thai Road). Daily prizes and Korean / Japanese snacks will be available.

The Shangri-La (New Road) is setting up a seven-foot extra action screen in The Pub on the 3rd floor of the Shangri-La Wing. Open from 1-11pm, daily, the venue will have a snack menu featuring favourites from countries participating in the competition.

Two super screens will televise the action in the Glaz Bar of Hotel Plaza Athenee (Witthayu Road). Special prizes will be available, along with snacks a la carte.

The Huntsman Pub at the Landmark Hotel (Sukhumvit Road) is installing a big screen for all live matches and replays. World Cup snacks and drinks will be served. The Dubliner (between Sukhumvit Soi 22 and 24) Irish pub will show all live games, as well as replays of taped games.

Other pubs offering the action on big screens include The Londoner Brew Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 33), O'Reillys (Soi Thaniya), Chequers (Soi Nana) and Bobby's Arms (Patpong). All branches of The Mall are installing huge 300-inch screens to show World Cup soccer.

Chequers has a good room upstairs with a big screen that will take a good crowd, but stay away for the England games if you're supporting the opposition.

you're having a laugh lg. chequers gets bigger crowds for the grand prix than the football. try cheering schumacer in there...
