CCTV video seized by police has exposed the moment an arsonist threw matches into a shop in Sydney's west, causing a massive explosion.

The security footage, obtained from a nearby hotel, shows a man tossing lit matches into the Station Street Jomaa Market in Wentworthville before it exploded into a fireball, injuring 10 people yesterday morning, Nine News reports.

Sniffer dogs yesterday afternoon reportedly detected traces of petrol.

The man captured in the vision had allegedly bought 10 litres of petrol from a BP service station across the road hours before the fire and was spotted again at the scene following the explosion.

North West Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford, said police were treating the fire as suspicious. They were yet to interview the man.

Wentworthville residents thought a bomb had hit when the two-storey market building exploded just after 4am, sending the store's front windows hurtling more than 15 metres and damaging several shop fronts across the road.

October 08, 2013: Eight police officers were injured when a series of blasts destroyed a Wentworthville supermarket in Sydney's west.

Syris Persia, one of two Iranian men living in a flat above the store, was thrown out of the building in the explosion and onto the footpath.

Authorities say it was a miracle that no one was killed.

Police have not released the CCTV to the public because they have already identified a suspect.
