Boo Radley
A passenger boat sank on the Khlong Saen Saep canal in BKK yesterday after hitting the pontoon at Wat Thep Lila pier at Hua Mak, Bang Kapi. One hundred passengers were on board, but escaped without injury by jumping off. One of the passengers on board, 32 year old Loxley engineer Danai Sibunchai, told reporters that he boarded the boat at Asoke and when it reached Wat Thep Lila pier it hit the pontoon with a loud bang. Water started entering the boat, but the driver told passengers not to worry and that the pumps would be able to deal with it. However this proved not to be the case, and the boat sank. http://youtu.be/cfDxswRf5aI http://www.dailynews...th/crime/241224
cavanami
> One hundred passengers were on board, but escaped without injury... ...and then the viral and bacteria infections will claim a few from that murky water!
Boo Radley
I've often wondered about that. Just the spray on that canal as you sit on the boat is bad enough!
cavanami
Had a friend get a few drops splashed into his eye while in the river taxi. Developed an infection that took months to beat down!
Flashermac
My first thought was that the passengers should have immediately been put into quarantine. They I read that they all got off before it sank. It is beyond me why the city doesn't at least try to do something with that lengthy cesspool. In the 1970s people still swam in Klong Saen Saep and it was full of fish. That is also the klong the famous "water babies" used to ply their trade on by the Elephant Head Bridge. It think the going rate in the mid 70s was 15 or 20 baht.
cavanami
They still swim in the klong near On Nut by Sukhumvit...I have seen people fishing in klongs that were so dirty you could walk on the "water"...uggggggggggggggggg

Bangkoktraveler
Riding on that canal is an experienced that I would say most people will not forget. No wonder they have plastic drop down screens on each side.
