Kind of why I never want to return there. The violence is one thing but the judicial system.....well it's just primitive.

Stop chopping people

The National, Friday 14th of March, 2014

A NATIONAL Court judge says the act of using weapons to chop people like firewood must be stopped.

Justice Salatiel Lenalia made the remark while handing down a suspended sentence of 12 months to Niuva Ebry for wounding Thomas Moong after an argument.

Lenalia suspended the sentence on the condition that Ebry kept the peace for two years and paid Moong K400.

Ebry admitted the offence, which happened on Feb 27 last year at Vunakaur village, in Toma, Gazelle district, when the two men had a row.

The court was told that Ebry swung a knife at Moong causing wounds on his left wrist.

Lenalia said the practice of using weapons to inflict wounds on each other must be stopped.

He said it was not the way to resolve differences.

Lenalia took into account the fact that Moong had later removed corrugated roofing iron from Ebry’s house to use.

“I would consider the action of the victim on this case as illegal because removing roofing iron from the family house will not to be accepted by this court,†he said.

“So it will not order a higher compensation since the victim had illegally enriched himself with materials removed from Ebry’s house.â€
