More than 200 men and women were rounded up and tested for drugs. Seven women and five men tested positive. The "Palozzo" nightspot takes up two floors of a three-storey building and features karaoke, television screens and sofas. The young men were dressed in the football strips of different countries to reflect World Cup fever. Their shirts had numbers on for female customers to pick. Narcotic Suppression Bureau Commissioner Lt-General Inthadet Pornpeerapan led the raid. He said the bar catered to all kinds of women, from massage girls and dancers to hi-society women and even students. A number of the women arrested were in their teens. He said the bar's business had been brisk with clients arrived from 7pm. It was most crowded between 11pm and 5am. "I heard that many female revellers resort to buying sex from men not only to satisfy their lust but to take revenge against men. They think that if men can buy sex from women, then they also can do likewise," Inthadet said. The bar operator was not on the premises when the raid took place. Although the owner has a licence for selling alcohol and cigarettes, Inthadet said he would be charged with operating a nightspot without a licence and selling alcohol outside legal hours. A female student who was present said she came to the bar for the first time with friends after leaving nightspots in RCA as most pubs there closed after 2am. She said she was attracted to the bar because it was open until dawn. Asked if she bought sex services from the men there, she said she could not remember. "I was drunk after many drinks at bars in RCA, but my friends who came with me bought the escort's services," she said. Alcoholic drinks were Bt200 per glass and the bar's members paid Bt5,000 to Bt8,000 per month, she said. After raiding the bar, police searched another bar called "Moh Khao" at Ruamjit Plaza on Sukhumvit 15. Back in the late '80s there was a coffee shop on Silom that was supposed to be a pickup place for women. I went by and looked one day, it sure seemed to be just that. Most of the gals doing the picking up appeared to be middle age and rather wealthy -- a lot of Chinese business looking types. (But some of them still nice enough to give a tumble ...) The story was the gal's husband had usually left her for a young mia noi. The wife then got revenge by going out and shagging men, and paying them with her husband's money! Apparently, a few Farangs were making good money hanging around that place and servicing the women. I was already married, but a younger colleague seriously thought about it. But it's sort of like ... why would they have to? Must be the anonymity, I suppose. Good way to avoid complications -- and for a society woman, a good way to open herself up to blackmail!
