Flashermac
Veteran journalist Somkiat Ornwian on Friday told US Secretary of State John Kerry that the US threat to cut aid to Thailand meant nothing. On his Facebook page, Somkiat said the US$10 million aid-cut meant very little to Thailand when compared to US$800 million of the national budget that Thaksin regime has allegedly misused. Kerry expressed disappointment at the Thai military's decision to suspend the charter and take control of the country after a long period of political unrest. "We are reviewing our military and other assistance and engagements, consistent with US law," he said. Somkiat said if the US is happy to support Thaksin corrupted regime, then so be it. "Someday the US will wake up and realise the difference between the authoritarian Thaksin regime in the guise of their own brand of democracy, and the full democracy as described by Alexis de Tocqueville 180 years ago," he said. "We in Thailand are now fiercely fighting for full democracy and will not settle for less." He also referred to reports on the coup by BBC and CNN, telling them that the situation in Thailand was beyond their grasp. "Time and more education will improve your understanding of Thailand," he said. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/US-Secretary-of-State-Kerrys-threat-to-stop-aid-sl-30234443.html
Guest
" Time and more education will improve your understanding of Thailand " There must be more to this, The US can't be this stupid if they not understand world affairs or can they. People have long memories, if anything this will go a some way to unite the Thai people in wanting a country without outside interference.
Flashermac
You wouldn't believe how insular the Untied States is and is becoming even more so. My sister tells me virtually nothing was reported about the Thai protests over the government's ramming through the amnesty bill to pardon Thaksin or the months-long anti-government protests that followed it. Now suddenly the headlines are screaming "Coup in Thailand!" People are shocked ... though they might be hard put to tell you what continent Thailand is in. The average American never travels outside of North America, and if they do the UK and western Europe is about as exotic as they get. John Kerry himself is a spoilt multi-millionaire who got where he is through his connections in the Skull & Bones fraternity. Ironic that the US government only disapproves of coups when they don't it in with its own plans.
Guest
I did see the results of a survey once, not sure how true it was but claimed 60% of Americans thought the sun went round the earth .

The_Munchmaster
So the US are going to withhold a paltry $10 million in aid? So fucking what?!
baa99
Australia, France, UK, etc. have all condemned the military coup! It is not about supporting Thaksin, but supporting democratic principles.
SpiceMan
Yes but they their condemnation was not strong. They know coup's in Thailand run to a script: army seizes power, changes the constitution, then holds elections. Repeat ad nauseum.
