After being harshly criticized online as being undeserving of the crown, Waluree “Fai†Disayabut decided to resign from her duty as Miss Thailand today.

In a press conference this afternoon with the Miss Universe Thailand committee, the 22-year-old claimed it was her decision to give up the crown after being subjected to insults and abuse which have affected her family emotionally.

"It is my own decision to resign," Fai said. "I don't regret it at all. At first, my family was happy that I won, but when society did not agree, all of our happiness was gone. My mother cannot sleep, and I can't either."

Last month, Fai was heavily criticised on the Internet as many Thais felt she was “too fat†to represent the country in the Miss Universe competition.

All manner of conspiracy theories have emerged.

In one, biased judges awarded Fai the crown to fuel her fame, as she’d just filmed episodes of a lakorn for Channel 3 before entering the competition.

The first runner-up, Pimbongkod “Ellie†Chankaew, the Thai-American beauty queen netizens rooted for, will represent the Thai beauty at the international Miss Universe.

Jeez, another foreign Miss Thailand. How many have there been now? One was a U.S. citizen, plus the Miss Thailand from Oz. I think there may even have been two from the States. When the one from Oz resigned her title, it went to a half-Danish girl. Maybe she is a wee bit fat, but the new winner looks like a khatoey. :p

Not fat maybe, but not a beauty queen either. She may be a great person but that's not the end of a beauty contest and whilst beauty itself might be subjective, I wouldn't classify either of the two above as particularly beautiful, faced with a competition that would showcase what the rest of the world considers beautiful the one on the left would, I think, be seen very much as the placebo.
