How did she know?

 

I'm reminded of a Penn and Teller piece where they went on the streets of New York and showed women two rings, both sporting massive diamonds.

 

The women were told to choose one. They were identical. No matter which one was chosen, the woman would then told that one was a cubic zirconia, the one she had chosen. All the women then wanted the other one.

 

The moral is, even if the woman doesn't know the difference, she'll always go for the more valuable.

 

I've seen this in Lao women, shopping for fake handbags in Laos. Even though they know all the examples they are looking at are fake, they invariably choose the fake that costs more than the others.

 

It's instinct.
