Coss
Well what most do not realize is that the Khmer empire extended all of the way in the west to Kanchanburi and down into southern Thailand (Srivijai Kingdom)up until the early 14th century-The Thais call it Lopburi period. So there are Khmer artifacts all over Thailand that are "indigenous" so to speak .Wonderful art. There are also Khmer ruins in Laos

Flashermac
Interesting that Hun Sen tries to claim all Khmer ruins along the Thai border, but says not a word about those in southern Laos. http://khmerization.blogspot.com/2011/04/khmer-ruins-south-of-savannkhet-laos.html
YimSiam
Virtual the only truly impressive remains in Thailand are from the Khmer period (okay, okay - Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai are good, too), when Thais were under the yoke of foreign domination... Phanomrung being I think the best example, also Phreah Vihar... But yeah, shhhh...
