Bangkok: An Australian businessman living on the Thai resort island of Phuket has been charged with murder after a Thai nightclub security guard died from stab wounds early on Wednesday.

Mark Hamilton Pendlebury, 59, is believed to have been walking home from a Rotary meeting when he became involved in an altercation outside a nightclub in Patong, a tourist entertainment area on the island.

Formerly of Western Australia, Mr Pendlebury is involved in charity work, runs a boating business and has lived on Phuket for about 10 years.

Initial police reports say he was walking past the Taipan nightclub at about 12.30am when he saw a scuffle involving a security guard evicting customers.

The Phuketwan news website quotes police saying Mr Pendlebury attempted to photograph the incident and an altercation ensued that led to stab wounds to the guard.

Both Mr Pendlebury and the guard were taken to Patong Hospital but the guard died soon after arriving. Mr Pendlebury's arrest has shocked foreign business people on Phuket.

Earlier this week he was arranging a boat trip for a handicapped Danish man who had been brutally attacked on a Phuket beach. Mr Pendlebury was providing the trip to help the man's recovery.

Foreign volunteer police, including Australians, who usually patrol the streets of Patong where the altercation occurred, stopped their patrols several days ago over a dispute with Thai police

I believe he put himself in this postion, people were being ejected from a nightclub probably because they were drunk and disorderly. The security were just doing their job of protecting the safety of other patrons of the nightclub, by just throwing them out. This can happen in any nightclub anywhere in the world, hence that's why clubs have bouncers.

To provoke matters by wanting to film the incident, to upload to Utube or facebook and being asked to stop, I dont think is unreasonable. Had he minded is own business, the life of the security guard would not have been lost. The only person armed with a knife was the Australian, whch he used to kill ...

There is a CCTV video of it on line.

The Thai "security personnel" spot him. Then it appears they then mob him, but it's hard to say what is going on. Finally, he turns and tries to walk away with them following him.

Strange that you place the blame without really knowing what happened. (None of us do.) The stupid thing was his carrying an illegal weapon. It's easy enough to buy pepper spray here, if you want it. If he'd used that, he wouldn't be under arrest right now.

Latest word is that Mark Pendlebury has been released on bail. The video supports his story. It is Pendlebury that you see at about 23 seconds on the opposite side of the street (white shirt). He takes a photo or two with his phone, then crosses the street. At 38 seconds he takes another photo in front of the club. He then is presumably told to stop by a guard, as he turns and starts walking away. However, he is immediately followed by 4 or 5 of the guards. What happens after that is partially blocked from view by a vehicle, but it appears that the guards all jumped him. He was fighting off a mob.

Still, he did stab somebody. What happens next is anyone's guess. TIT

Well for sure, he carried a knife he was prepared to use it and stabbed someone to death in a fight, and has been charged with his murder.
