Dr Prof Ing Waerth has come to the conclusion that the reason why Thailand's average IQ is below most of the world and lowest in Asean has one reason. Som Tam.

Herr Waerth has employed 2 Cambodian twin brothers. The look fairly alike, were born just after eachother. Characterwise they are different.

One is a serious, intelligent young man. Dedicated to work as good as he can. The other is only working hard when prodded and seems to have lost his intelligence along the way. According to the other brother he was alot more serious and intelligent before he came to Thailand.

Now guess what. The intelligent brother cannot stand Som Tam. Thinks it is horrible, especially the Pa La. The other brother whom was intelligent and hardworking before became Som Tam addicted here in Thailand.

I really think I am on to something here!

The more scientific reason perhaps ....

Doctors suspect chemicals like styrene can cause symptoms of “brain fog†resembling Alzheimer’s disease.

The widespread practice in Thailand of using foam containers or plastic bags for “take away†food orders is a hidden health hazard, doctors warn. Heated food causes chemicals like styrene to leach into the food and end up absorbed by the body. Some chemicals are known carcinogens, so eating takeout food from foam containers should be minimized.

The type of foam generally used for takeout containers is Styrofoam, which is made from the black waste from the petroleum fuel distillation, says Dr. Weerachat Kittirattanapaibool, an environmental packaging specialist.

Sytrofoam containers contain the chemical styrene, which has a molecular structure similar to estrogen hormone in females, Dr. Weerachat said. The problem is that any chemicals contained in the styrofoam will leach into the foods inside, especially if the food or liquid is hot.

The styrene is then consumed by humans along with the food. Although there are no definitive studies of the long-term effect of styrene and other chemicals, evidence suggest that years of accumulating traces of chemicals in the body may lead to diseases or even premature death.

Exposure to styrene may affect mood and cause irritability, and result in females having irregular menstrual periods, Dr. Weerachat said. Statistically, a person who eats at least one meal daily from Styrofoam containers for 10 years will increase his cancer risk 6 times above normal, he said. Other studies suggest similar risks from the plastic bags also used for takeout foods.

I find that periodic eating of som tam (with crab, or best, some pla raa) is an excellent way to regulate weight gain: it is difficult to each much, and while I cannot attest to the lining of my colon, virtually everything else in there passes quickly through for about a week after.

Kind of like the Indian Guarantee Weight Loss Spa I hope to open someday - guests arrive, drink one glass of Delhi tap water their first day, and for the rest of the week are free to do and to eat anything they are able to. Upon returning home, they will be gaunt as they could wish for. Cost per week yet to be determined.

For foreigners without long residency, you have a chicken and egg problem with pla ra - if you're dumb enough to jump in and eat, it's hard to measure subsequent deterioration in intelligence...
