cavanami
Last time I went to Penang, I took the train there (24 hours) and then flew back. Spent 3 ~ 4 days there, was a nice break from the same-o, same-o in Thailand.
Flashermac
I've done the train twice, a nice way to see the south, eating all the way. I enjoyed the train trip the first time, but the second got to be a bit boring. (Been there, done it.) But I enjoyed taking the ferry from the mainland to Penang early in the morning. That always added a touch of adventure. Also, there are now no booze sales on the trains. A coupled of years ago a train employee raped and murdered a 13 year old student. Since he'd been drinking, the railway's reponse was to ban sales of alcohol to the passengers! WTF? Those ice cold bottles of beer were one of the pleasures of train travel. Flashermac
There are signs that say No Alcohol. I suppose you could always carry on a plastic bag full of beer, and I doubt if they'd bother you if you got a first class compartment. But who wants to pay for a compartment just to drink a beer?
