Businesses DO. I know one company in Bangkok that has a load of Fortune 500 clients in Europe, Japan, and North America, and happy clients to boot. They also do smaller jobs for local individuals, everything from school records to love letters to/from bar girls and their clients overseas. And I know the rates. And THEIR translations are damned good. I deal with a number of translation services, and I know how to find good translations in Bangkok, not just in English, but Urdu, Hindi, Khmer, you name it.

You sound as if you have had some bad experiences with translation services? Or are you just figuring that you've seen bad English throughout Thailand, so therefore there are no good translation services? If you HAVE had bad first-hand experiences, I can steer you toward a good company or two. I know native-speaking Editors that make very good livings here in Thailand with translation agencies.
