The terrorists have unwittingly reignited people's interest in seeing their own country. I've heard good things about Broome, on the north coast of Western Australia : the locals are an interesting mix of Asian and Australian ethnicities, its less touristy and still has enough accomodation/restaurants etc to make it a viable destination. I've never been to the Kimberley's, but it does look like a spectacular place to visit.
