SYDNEY: Australians are being asked to do what they love doing best, drink beer, to raise money for the victims of the Bali bombings.

The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) in Western Australia state, home to 15 of the possible 92 Australian blast victims, will stage a Bali fund-raising hour on Friday, donating $A2 ($NZ2.31) from every $A3 beer to families of the victims.

The Bali Hour will start at 6pm, the busiest time of the week for hotels as thirsty Australians wash away a week's work, and all money raised will be added to a Bali relief fund run by the lord mayor of Perth, the capital of Western Australia.

A total of 100 of the state's 700 hotels have signed up for the Bali Hour, but AHA state executive director Brad Woods said today he expected many more to hold a Bali Hour on Friday.

The government said that the Australian Red Cross had raised $A9 million in a national appeal for funds for victims of the bombings. Western Australia has been hit hard by the Bali deaths, with the majority of its population living in and around Perth where the victims come from. One local football team lost seven members and many of those badly burned are being treated in Perth.

"One of our own industry members (a hotel owner) is still missing as a result of the attacks," said Woods. "Our industry shares the grief of all Australians at this tragic event."
