Hedonist
Please, can anybody give me the Thai spelling of the word 'poompui' meaning plump or chubby. My dictionary does not seem to have it, yet its a commonly used word. Thanks.
Guest
ปุ้มปุ๊ย...I think (and the TG who is with me at the moment -- albeit not the most educated girl in the world -- hesitantly agrees).

Guest
I can't read either my response or Daeng's...both jibberish. Something wrong?
Hedonist
You probably need to set the encoding for special characters. In Internet Explorer go to 'View' then 'Encoding' then select Thai (Windows) from the list. Daeng's post should then show Thai script for special characters. Guest
OK; got it now. The spelling I'd originally speculated on was »ØéûØê versus Daeng's »ØèûØÂ. The TG who was with me at the time said mine "looked right" but that she wouldn't bet the farm on it. None of my dictionaries seem to have this common colloquialism in it. Hedonist
I wonder if its from the Lao language? Anybody have a Lao dictionary?
Boo Radley
Hi, I remember trying to find the spelling of this word a while back, but it was missing from every dictionary I looked in. Strange for such a widely used word. I asked some Thais, and they all gave the following spelling: »ØéûØéÂ. Although when I hear it pronounced in normal conversation it sounds more like it should be spelt ȯûØ ie mid-mid tone. Apparently, there's a brand of Thai tinned pilchards called »ØéûØé pilchards, and this is where the word comes from. Or, it could be the other way around, and the pilchards took their name from the existing word.
