Hedonist
I got this explanation from a well-educated Thai: The word pumpui is actually baby-talk, its like saying 'easy-peasy' instead of just 'easy'. The standard Thai words for fat are quite rude, so this word is often used instead. The fish brand name came later.

Pescator
Actually Pui means something quite different - fertilizer. That is by the way also the nickname of the former miss world from Thailand. Cheers Hua Nguu

Hedonist
Parents often give their babies unflattering nick-names like Fatty or Pig (Moo). The spirits will not be interested in a baby with such a name and so will not take them away. To name a baby 'fertilizer' would be too unkind! Pescator
Well, but it seemed to work with the former thai miss world The bad spirits left her alone and now she is succesfull, beautiful, loaded, respected etc. Cheers Hua Nguu

Pescator
Oh, sorry about that. Just re-read your post and you did mention in it that her nickname Pui was an abbreviation of Pompui. (I must read the post before I reply, I must read the post before I reply, I must read ...... 100 times.) Oan? Yes, I am sure she`ll appreciate that. Or you could try out an alternative : Dtua beloh :: Cheers Hua Nguu
