Rare to see interviews in english with thai singers, but there are some at http://www.thailife.de/index_e.html Seems our german friends have a good cultural thing going. Here in the UK all we have is the food fair and this year the film fair, which seems to have gone very quiet, mr town hall is it still on? Singers never come, maybe because of the difficluty in getting a visa. The link has audio, very intersting read if you like luktung/morlam-peter

The interviews were from thai-german-english of course. Cannot say what mikes most popular songs are, I only have one CD of his, vol 9. naksu mor 3. The more I hear him though the more I like his sound, well the grammy sound, so I will be getting some more. He is very popular in LOS now. Last time I was at a vettethai concert (on TV) they anounced some sort of poll and he was voted number one luktung singer, fon thanasunthorn was the only other I remember at no 5, think Yui Yatt Yerr might have been no 2-peter

"mike piromporn i do not know very well. what are his most popular songs? "

I take it you are not in Thailand at the present and have not been for a few years. Mi' is HUGE here possibly one of the more successful crossover acts. His debut hit, make that megahit, was the working class anthem "pen fan kon jon tong thon noi 'nong"

LukThoong is making serious inroads into mainstream Thai pop. Ever since "Benz"Pornchida na Songklha did the hit 'lakorn' about a luktoong superstar. Even P'Bird has just released an album with a strong lukthoong flavour, he even has a duet with Jintara. Unfortunately it still sounds like P'Bird crap. Death to Grammy (or is that Gr--mm-?)

Says markle:

LukThoong is making serious inroads into mainstream Thai pop. -?)

Thank god, but I'm not sure this is so. Cannot think of anything worse than having to sit in a karaoke and listen to palmy. Seems like luktung is constantly evolving and does not much resemble what was around in the 50's 60's and 70's. A lot of the same old songs are around but the arrangements vary a lot. Most noticeable is the quality of the instumental backing, the old stuff sounds terrible today. The backing on Surapol records, the elvis of luktung, sounds very crude and unprofessional making the songs not easy to listen to.The cha cha cha CD's are fun but the electronic beat is getting a bit monotonous. I like the grammy sound, best Siriporn is on grammy and they make good VCD's.

Does anyone have any contacts in the thai music industry?-peter

your conclusions are somehow strange; i know farangs living in thailand for 10 or more consecutive years and they have no clue about luk thung and could not say one name of a current popular singer...

pen fan khon djon is really a bit outdated; it was already a "classic" some years ago. i was more asking about his current most popular songs. i looked up in my cd collection (of newer cd's) and could find following titles of mike, splitted over 3 collections with defferent singers:

narachart wang wai

rang wan khon soo

nueay mai khon dee

nay hoy thamin

duay raeng haeng rak

khae khaek rap chen

ngan nak raksa chai

djao nee huadjai

peter, any thoughts?

"your conclusions are somehow strange"

Sorry I put 2 nad 2 together and came up with 5.

Truthfully I don't follow Thai pop music now that I have UBC. I've always respected luk Toong however because there seems to be more rigorous talent selection. Many of these artists have taken the long road to the top. Not like your latest flash in the pan pop act.

Personally Grammy and the like getting into lukthoong is a bad omen for me. The Big Guys (Grammy and RS) have destroyed mainstream Thai music and I'm sure they'll do the same for Luk Thoong.

"Does anyone have any contacts in the thai music industry?"

What do you mean by contacts?

I have a friend who is the niece of the guy that owns record label that has Yuy Yatyeu on the books.

Another friend works for Grammy

Yet another friend is a DJ and music journalist with Matichon.

What did you want to know?
